Public Share

Public Share is a New Zealand artist collective engaging in ideas of production and exchange. We combine object making and site exploration with social engagement and critique, maintaining a particular interest in workplace rituals. We make and disseminate functional ceramic objects that facilitate time for pause, reflection and connection. Our projects involve events that engage a temporary public. Worksite tearooms and gallery foyers are utilised to host art events that focus on reciprocity and conviviality. The collective engages with sites undergoing change and the workplace conditions that govern workers’ everyday activities, such as the recent elimination by the New Zealand government of the hard won entitlement to two10-minute tea breaks in the working day. Public Share invites exchange within the setting of the tea break, which is symbolic of the notion of workers’ rights and asserts the social and political implications of what it means to take pause. Poised as makers of the social, the collective frames events as sites of exchange through the production of objects that act as conduits for an extended form of sociality, generosity and reciprocity. |
